Returning Nassau Bay residents may not stay in homes
The city is working hard to restore vital services to our community.
At this time we do not have sewer service because the wastewater treatment plant was inundated and under water for some time. Without sewer service, it is a major health hazard for residents to return. For that reason, we are asking residents to remain away from Nassau Bay until sewer is restored.
We also do not have electricity and are not expecting major progress on electricity for several days. There are a few residents who did not evacuate still in town. Those residents are being allowed to exit and re-enter Nassau Bay to obtain needed supplies.
For those residents who return: We are allowing limited access to your homes (30 minutes) to briefly inspect the condition of their property and gather medicine, clothing, and other essential items.
That system operates as follows:
Odd number street addresses: From 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Even number street addresses: From 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Curfew is 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
We just started this system today and so far there are people waiting in line. Only a few residents are being allowed in at a time.
Residents are reminded that conditions are austere in our region at this time and you are likely better off not returning...you will not be allowed to stay in your home.
Again, there is sewer, no electrical, very limited medical support, water is to be boiled. This likely applies to most of the small cities.
As a general comment about homes in Nassau Bay: Homes in low lying areas did receive water from Clear Lake, particularly those along Upper Bay Road cul-de-sacs, those around Harbour Martinique area, low lying homes around Lake Nassau, some low-lying in Swan Lagoon.
The water is receding slowly at this time. Many, many trees are down. Many homes have tree limbs on them. Only a few have been badly damaged by trees. Electrical lines have been damaged and are a big concern for returning residents.
No loss of life reported at this time
