WCA supports ban on roadside animal sales
By T.L. Hamilton
THE WOODLANDS – The Woodlands Community Association decided to support the ban of roadside animal sales in Montgomery County.
Laura McConnell, president of The Woodlands Dog Park Club, addressed the board Wednesday about the dangers posed by roadside sellers.
Since the animals are sold by unqualified, unlicensed breeders at discounted prices to anyone interested in buying, many of the animals end up being dumped by their owners, she said.
“We had about 2,400 animals come into the shelter last month, and most of them are going to be killed,” she said.
“We see the results of roadside sales coming into the shelter every day, and it’s a tragedy in Montgomery County.”
McConnell said the club is pushing for legislation to regulate roadside selling in all counties contiguous to Harris County, who prohibited roadside sales in 2007.
State Rep. Rob Eissler, R-The Woodlands, has offered to author the bill, McConnell said.
The association’s motion to support the ban was supported unanimously by board members and was met with applause from animal volunteers who attended the meeting.
During public comments, resident Steve Leakey discussed The Woodlands Township’s meeting time change.
The board had an item on the agenda to discuss where it stands on the meeting time issue. However, the township had since changed the meeting time from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., so no discussion or action was taken.
“I was pleased with the steps taken to open up information, and there’s been good progress there,” said Leakey, referring to the Township’s efforts to post meeting notes and videos on their website.
“Nine a.m. is better for me; but ultimately, we will need them to change to evening meeting times,” he said.
