Popular music has been the buzzword this summer for the Houston Symphony, but on Sept. 19, classical music will again grace the stage of The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.

As the Houston Symphony presents the “Music of Mozart,” audiences will hear the sounds of both Mozart and Ravel.

“This is one of the more classical symphonies, so the audience will get to experience more of the classical side of the symphony,” said Courtney Galle, public relations manager for the Pavilion. “Before the show we will have some of our regular pre-concert activities including the Pavilion Partners instrument petting zoo, which just recently received a generous donation from Music & Arts with new instruments.”

Beginning at 8 p.m., the “Music of Mozart” will be led by Hans Graf, a longtime conductor for the Symphony. Pre-concert activities begin at 7 p.m. with arts and crafts booths for children and a Pavilion Talk discussion led by Tom Richards, beginning at 7:15 p.m.

“We will have Mosquito Nix, The Woodlands Country Club, the Chick-fil-A Cow and Millennium Audi, official automobile sponsor of The Pavilion all on hand to entertain guests before the concert,” Galle added. “Guests also can register-to-win Tommy Bahama’s best seats in the house.

“Music of Mozart is a great way to introduce yourself to the Houston Symphony,” she said. “The program is a classical program highlighting two of the most famous classical artists in history.”

Songs scheduled for the evening include Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 and Symphony No. 35, Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin,” and Symphony No. 29.

Tickets for “Music of Mozart” are $15 for covered reserved, $10 for uncovered reserved and free lawn seating is provided by The Wortham Foundation and KPMG, LLP.

For this performance, everyone who donates a new or used musical instrument to the Pavilion will receive up to eight half-price tickets to the show.

“The instrument drive is going well,” Galle said. “We are very excited about the turnout for the instrument drive so far.

“The Woodlands community is showing support for music education in our county,” she added. “We have had over 15 instruments donated so far. We are looking forward to more donations throughout the next few weeks.”

Once the instrument drive is over on Sept. 19, all donated instruments will be given to children in Title 1 schools in Montgomery County.

Tickets may be purchased at The Pavilion Ticket Office, 2005 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands, at all Ticketmaster outlets or online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling (713) 629-3700.

The Pavilion has a busy schedule lined up in the coming weeks, with performances by big-name artists such as Santana, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and 3 Doors Down.

On Oct. 2, the Houston Ballet presents “Classics on Pointe” featuring “Five Tangos,” “Falling” and “Symphony in C.”

Galle said the program consists of three dances inspired by different styles of music that highlight the versatility of the dancers.

“The ballet showcases three ingenious and internationally acclaimed choreographers presenting their own interpretations of classical dance,” she said.

“Classics on Pointe” begins at 8 p.m. Oct. 2 and tickets are $15 for covered reserved, $10 for uncovered reserved and lawn seating is free.
