PVAMU career week set Sept. 17-18 on campus

Updated: 09.11.08
PRAIRIE VIEW - Sept. 15-18 is Career Emphasis week at Prairie View A&M University and more than one hundred of America’s top companies, government agencies, graduate schools and non-profit organizations are set to participate in the 38th Annual Fall Career Fair. The increased company participation and the strategic focus of the Career Center validates the need to continue the event in two parts with the All Majors and Technical Job Fairs on September 17 and 18, respectively from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily in the Willie A. Tempton Memorial Student Center. The Career Fair is an opportunity for the students to meet with corporate recruiters and to secure full-time, part-time, and internship positions.

The increased use of the internet to pre-screen candidates for possible employment has led many companies to scale back in their recruitment levels and participation in career fairs. However, the competition for qualified candidates to fill professional vacancies and the need for building a diverse work-force is one reason why companies continue to participate in programs that have yielded past success. “Prairie View A&M University continues to be the ‘campus of choice’ for these companies,” says Glenda Jones, Director for Career Services.

Under the theme: “Priority Number One,” the Career Center is poised to make a career difference in the lives of the students with several pre-career fair activities to engage the students. According to Glenda Jones, Director for Career Services, “It is important that we help our students to make the right connections as they prepare for their futures. We believe this year’s Career Fair will be one of the largest ever.”

Other activities set for the week include a Resume’ Fair and Mock Interviews with corporate employees on Sept. 11; the Annual I. C. Gordon Student Recognition Banquet honoring students corporate and private interns, Research Assistants and Military personnel for 2007-08 on Sept. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Willie A. Tempton Memorial Student Center Ballroom and the Corporate Networking Social and Open House at the Crowne Plaza Brookhollow Hotel in Houston on Sept. 17, supported by Center Point Energy, GE and Shell.

The Center continues to host a series of professional development seminars to assist students in preparing for the corporate campus interviews to include interviewing techniques, dress, salary negotiations and corporate etiquette. The events are open to students and alumni who are encouraged to register with Career Services for the services.

For information, call (936) 261-3570 or contact the career center.
