EYE ON BIG BROTHER: MacDonald staying in the game with ‘wing and a prayer’

When the Sept. 9 episode of “Big Brother 10” ended, cameras showed Magnolia resident Gerald “Jerry” MacDonald holding on with a wing and prayer. That was the name of the competition the 75-year-old was competing in hopes of making it to the finals of the reality show and win $500,000.
MacDonald was facing off against two much younger houseguests, Dan Gheesling, 25, a high school teacher from Dearborn, Mich.; and Robert “Memphis” Garrett, 25, a mixologist and party planner from Los Angeles.
In a live episode, it was up to Garrett, who won the power of veto, to take himself off the eviction block and replace himself with Keesha Smith, 29, a waitress from Burbank, Calif.
Earlier this week, it looked as if this would be MacDonald’s last week in the BB10 studio house. Because the current HoH, Gheesling, couldn’t vote, and two of the four remaining contestants were up for eviction, Garrett’s PoV gave him the deciding vote in who woud leave the house.
His decision ended up being a tearful one for Smith whom Garrett had promised would be in the final three with himself and Gheesling.
Garrett and Gheesling, who call themselves the renegades, formed a two person alliance early on in the reality show, but it is Gheesling who seems to be the mastermind behind the duo, as they pretend with the rest of the housemates that they have been betraying each other with eviction nominations.
It was Gheesling who got Garrett to suggest evicting Smith as the two saw MacDonald as the weakest threat in the final which airs one week from Sept. 9.
A tearful and angry Smith realized Garrett was planing to evict her the night before the live show’s eviction, saying that she would not go to the jury house and cast a vote in the final for him to win the competition. She said she would vote for Gheesling.
Ghessling told his video diary that he hoped Smith’s eviction would make him appear as the good-guy in order to gain another vote by the jury in the final.
He had already started working on getting the evicted house guests to vote for him by inviting one of his worst enemies, Michelle Costa, 28, real estate agent from Cumberland, R.I., on a trip out of the BB10 hours and jury house to a private beach for some swimming and lunch.
For now, though, MacDonald, who volunteers for Abandoned Animal Rescue in Tomball, was still hanging on, hoping to find a way to stay in the competition until the end. Viewers won’t find out how he did on the HoH competition until 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11 on KHOU Channel 11.
A special Sunday, Spet. 14, airing at 7 p.m., will include never before seen video from the house. All of the house guests will return to the show in a live show at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16 where the jury of evicted house contestants will help decide who will leave the house $500,000 richer.
