Alleged bank robber caught in Corpus Christi
By BRENDA EVANS
The man who allegedly robbed a Pasadena bank in August was nabbed by a special weapons enforcement team (SWAT) in southern Texas on Friday, the day after he robbed the same bank in Pasadena a second time.
Daniel Garcia and Angela Barajas, believed to be an accomplice, both 27, are being detained in the Nueces County jail in Corpus Christi awaiting extradition to Harris County.
Pasadena Police Department Public Information Officer Vance Mitchell said that at 12:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, a man went into the bank at 5714 Fairmont Parkway and engaged in small talk with a person at the bank.
“He then announced, `This is a bank robbery. You know what to do,'” Mitchell said.
Mitchell said the bank employees realized this man was the same suspect that had robbed the bank before.
“The teller emptied the contents of the cash drawer into the suspect’s bag,” he said. “He then left in an unknown direction.”
The detectives went to the Citibank and began their investigation.
“They made the connection immediately and concluded that this guy was the same guy who had robbed the bank before,” said Mitchell.
Corpus Christi Police Department Capt. Tim Wilson said they are not the agency who should get the credit for these arrests.
“The Houston Police Department contacted us early Friday afternoon and told us that a couple of subjects were wanted for robberies in and around the Houston area,” he said. “They had reason to believe that they were staying down here in a hotel.”
Corpus Chirsti police connected the two suspects to three robberies in the Corpus Christi area.
“We think they robbed an adult video store, a LaQuinta Inn and a Radio Shack,” he said.
Several officers went down to the hotel.
“They saw a female standing outside,” said Wilson. “She ran inside a motel room. They wouldn't come out and we believed them to be armed.”
Wilson said they had to call out the SWAT team to apprehend the suspects.
“The suspects were barricaded for approximately 2 hours,” he said. “We got them and they are now jailed in the Nueces County jail for robbery warrants out of the Houston area. We are going to file on them for the three robberies, here, too.”
Maria Medrano, office manager at the Nueces County Sheriff's Office, said Garcia was being held for multiple charges. “Aggravated robbery, $100,000 bond,” she said, “out of County Harris County warrant for aggravated robbery on a $30,000 bond and out of county Harris County warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon on a $30,000 bond.”
Barajas is being held on an out-of-county Harris County warrant on a $30,000 bond.
“Harris County has been notified that they are both ready for pick up and we are awaiting a date when they will be transferred to their county,” said Medrano.
