Preschoolers in Harris County get head start on education
By YVETTE OROZCO
Preschoolers throughout Harris County are ready for the new school year, thanks to a $57,000 donation to Operation School Bell.
The program designed by the Assistance League of Houston to provide underserved areas and preschool students with school uniforms.
The donation came courtesy of The Children’s Fund, Inc., a nonprofit organization which funds charities that help children throughout the surrounding Houston area.
“These uniforms mean everything to our young, enthusiastic students and their families,” said Venetia Peacock, director of HCDE Head Start Area I, which serves east Harris County in neighborhoods like La Porte, Baytown, Kashmere, Fifth Ward, Humble and Pasadena. “With economic conditions putting tighter financial restraints on families, many couldn’t afford these uniforms otherwise. Our deepest thanks to the Assistance League of Houston and The Children’s Fund, Inc.”
Uniforms are scheduled to be delivered to the HCDE Head Start families in September.
Each Head Start child in Harris County will receive a packet that includes a hooded windbreaker, underwear, socks, three shirts, two pairs of pants, hygiene kits and shoe vouchers.
Families of the children have to be 100 percent level to eligible, said Peacock.
“We are serving needy families and children who are at risk,” she said. “You have people making choices about what to eat versus what to wear.”
