Cornyn to help open new Republican party headquarters

By AUDREY M. MARKS
Updated: 08.26.08
The doors of Republican Party of Fort Bend County’s election season headquarters will officially open Saturday Aug. 30 in Sugar Land, flanked by candidates and elected officials.

The party was “looking for a location that provided excellent, easy access, a store front and visibility to all voters,” Rick Miller, chairman of the Republican Party of Fort Bend, said in an e-mail to the Sun.

The new location, at 13509 Southwest Freeway, is also “in the demographic center of the county at the current time,” Miller said.

But knowing Republicans from the far reaches of the county won’t want to travel to Sugar Land to pick up yard signs, Miller said two precinct chairs, most likely in Rosenberg and Pecan Grove, will turn their homes into satellite locations for local supporters.

The two locations will be announced later this week.

Sen. John Cornyn, running for re-election, will serve as the special guest and primary speaker for Saturday’s grand opening.

He will be accompanied by Olson; Republican candidates for the state Senate District 17 seat Austen Furse, Grant Harpold, and Joan Huffman; State Reps. Charlie Howard, John Zerwas, State Representative District 27 candidate Steve Host, County Commissioner Pct. 3 Andy Meyers, County Commissioner Pct. 1 Candidate Greg Ordeneaux, 387th District Court Judge Robert J. Kern, 400th District Court Judge Cliff Vacek, 434th District Court Judge Jim Shoemake, Fort Bend County Sheriff Milton Wright, County Attorney Roy Cordes, Jr., and County Tax Assessor – Collector Patsy Schultz.

Additionally, the new headquarters will be a stone’s throw away from Republican candidate Pete Olson’s Sugar Land campaign office.

Miller said sharing the same building with Olson will be good for Republicans and Pete as they continue to campaign into November.
