Community provides supplies to local schools

Updated: 09.05.08
Community school supply drives and donations started Pearland Independent School District students on the right foot this school year.

Operation Backpack, hosted by Vic Coppinger Family YMCA and other Houston-area YMCAs, collected 460 backpacks and 7,315 supplies for Pearland ISD.

“The most rewarding part is seeing students’ excitement when they get the new supplies and knowing we are helping parents who need the extra assistance as they prepare their kids for the new school year,” Roxie Patton, Coppinger YMCA childcare director, said.

Local residents dropped off new backpacks and supplies at Coppinger YMCA and New Hope Church, and YMCA employees, volunteers and student campers filled the backpacks. Sponsors for the fourth annual Operation Backpack drive included 89.3 FM KSBJ and ABC 13 Houston.

In addition, Operation School Supplies, another citywide drive, delivered several cases of school supplies to Lawhon Elementary. The school supply drive’s corporate sponsors included Apache Corporation, H-E-B, United Way of Greater Houston, Coca-Cola Bottling Company, University of Houston Alumni Organization, FOX 26, UPN 20, Houston Community Newspapers, Houston Astros, Houston Public Library, SUNNY 99.1 and Texas 2-1-1.

Local churches and businesses also lent a hand in preparing students for classroom success. First Baptist Church of Pearland donated supplies for 60 students at Lawhon and Cockrell elementary schools and Jamison and Sablatura middle schools, while St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church donated three large boxes of supplies to Lawhon. In addition, the Main Street Wal-Mart donated supplies for about 35 students.

Pearland ISD welcomed over 17,400 students the first week of school.
