San Jacinto College Central will host a keyboard workshop to help participants set up music lessons in piano or organ. Information on procuring instruments will be included.

The workshop is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m., in the Corbin Recital Hall, located inside the Monte Blue Music Building.

The workshop is free to the public and will last about an hour and a half. It is designed for parents or individuals interested in pursuing lessons for their children or themselves.

Musicians who teach piano and organ will be on hand to provide information about private music lessons. Vendors who sell pianos and organs, and technicians who repair keyboard instruments, will also be on hand with sales and service information.

San Jacinto College Central is also planning a pre-college class for beginning piano students. The projected start date for the class is Oct. 1, and the first class will be for elementary students, possibly third- through fifth-grade students. “There will be a fee, but it will be quite affordable in comparison to private lessons,” said Martha Braswell, music professor at the College who is coordinating the program.

The location for the pre-college piano class will be the Monte Blue Music Building, room 108, and be staffed by instructors from the music department. Each class will be limited to 12 students.

“The rationale behind the concept of a pre-college piano class is two-fold,” noted Braswell. “Qualified piano teachers are rather scarce, especially in this area. Those who do teach have waiting lists for students. The concept of piano lessons for children has been around since the invention of the piano in the early 1700s. Persons of education during that time were considered ‘unfinished’ if they could not play a keyboard instrument. Today, keyboards are readily available, but instruction is not included in the public school, and so it is very important to offer this to our community.”
