Broncos end losing streak to Bay City

Dayton experienced some highs and lows in their season opener Friday night against Bay City, a team that had ended Bronco playoff hopes in ’01 and ‘03. While the offense was churning up 364 yards of total offense the defense did allow the Blackcats to rush for 169 yards on the ground.

But the offense was good enough for five scores and the defense came up big when needed as the Broncos opened the 2008 season with a 35-7 win at Bronco stadium. The win was also the 100th victory for Dayton’s Jerry Stewart as the Bronco’s head football coach.

"I am just exhausted right now," Stewart said as he walked off the field.

Cody Green looked to be in mid-season form as the senior quarterback passed for 276 yards and five scores on 23 of 31 passing.

"Cody looked very sharp tonight," Stewart said.

The Broncos would score on four of their first six possessions to jump on Bay City 28-7 early in the third quarter.

It did not take Dayton long to get on the board and take an early lead. After holding the Blackcats to a three-and-out on the games first possession it was A.J. Dugat giving the offense a short field to work on. Fielding the punt of Bay City's Derek Montgomery at his own 36, the senior returned it 35-yards to the Blackcat 29-yard line. Five plays later it was Dugat finishing what he started as Green hit him from 10-yards out at the 8:46 mark of the first quarter.

On their second series it was a Green fumble that set Bay City up at the Bronco 48-yard line. Six plays later the Dayton defense returned the favor by recovering a fumble of their own. Facing a 2nd and six from the Bronco 20-yard line it was Blackcat quarterback Travis Tomek losing the football into the open arms of Jordan Baxter.

Green would then march the Dayton offense 78-yards on eight plays. Going five-for-five on the drive it was Green hitting Payton Ploch from fifteen yards out on the first play of the second quarter for a 14-0 lead. Green would connect on his first nine passes.

Bay City (0-1) then put together a drive of their own to cut the lead in half as Letevin Wilcox broke three missed tackles for a 20-yard touchdown run.

"We have got to tackle better," said Stewart. "We are just not a very physical team right now.”

Just before the half the Broncos would add another score as Green guided the offense down the field. Going 85 yards on nine plays it was Green hitting Dugat from 27 yards out on a post route and a 21-7 half-time lead. Dugat would finish the game with 10 catches for 117 yards.

It never looked as if Dayton went into the locker room as they quickly took the second half kickoff and marched 67 yards on just six plays. Green would find Ploch from eight yards out just two and half minutes into the half to make it 28-7. The big play of the drive was a 48-yard pass to Damian Berrotte.

Dayton (1-0) then mixed in the pass and the run for its final score of the night. B.J. Jones who finished with 87-yards on 10 carries had runs of 11 and 12 yards on the drive.

"B.J. ran the ball pretty good for us; we just have to get him to block a little bit,” added Stewart.

Green then threw touchdown pass number five on the night, this one to Ploch from 22-yards out to give the junior the hat trick. Ploch would finish the night with six catches for 61-yards.

This Friday will see one of the marquee match ups in the Greater Houston Area as Dayton will travel to Friendswood to face the Mustangs and quarterback Jacob Karam.
