Schools take their place on state honor roll

Updated: 09.02.08
It was only the second day of school, but an “honor roll” was already being heralded on a number of Examiner-area Houston ISD campuses last week.

Eighteen HISD schools were named to the Texas Business and Education Coalition list of Texas Honor Roll institutions, a distinction awarded to 198 schools statewide.

Those listed were Bellaire High School. Carnegie Vanguard High School, Condit Elementary School, Cornelius Elementary School, DeZavala Elementary School, DeBakey High School for Health Professions, Eastwood Academy, Energized for Excellence Middle School, Kennedy Elementary School, Kolter Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, Oates Elementary School, Pin Oak Middle School, T.H. Rogers Elementary School, T.H. Rogers Middle School, Twain Elementary School, West University Elementary School and White Elementary School.

Criteria for selection is three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. The TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state's most rigorous standard, "commended" performance, in every subject.

"I've long thought that the TBEC Honor Roll is one of the most prestigious awards a Texas school can receive,” said Dianne Johnson, District V HISD trustee. “I'm particularly pleased and proud of the record number of schools making the list this year in District V. "

Mark Twain’s PTO president gave credit to faculty and staff. “We as parents at Mark Twain feel extremely fortunate to have such a remarkable community of educators that provide an exceptional education for all our children,” said Jill Herrera.

Less than 5 percent of the more than 8,000 public schools in Texas earn the honor. For 11 HISD schools this is the second consecutive year on the honor roll, and eight schools have made honor roll for the three consecutive years.

The schools will be recognized on November 10 in San Antonio at TBEC’s 9th Annual Honor Roll Celebration.
