The Baytown Special Rodeo Association is rounding up participants and volunteers for the 2008 edition of its western day event for youngsters with special needs. The 2008 Baytown Special Rodeo will be held. Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Eastside Honda Pavilion near Mont Belvieu.

The annual event provides youngsters with varying levels of disability the opportunity to ride a horse, pet a bunny, listen to music, eat hamburgers and hotdogs, rope a “calf,” ride a barrel train, climb inside a race car, ride in a real Conestoga wagon, pull the siren on a giant fire truck and much more.

“Youngsters, from pre-school to middle school age, with various handicaps do not have many chances to participate in fun things scaled to their abilities,” said J.R. Miller, chairman of the BSRA Committee. “Baytown Special Rodeo seeks to change that with a fun-filled day of activities designed just for them, their parents and their siblings, all at no cost to their families. Thanks to hundreds of volunteers and our generous sponsors, we have been able to do that for the past seven years. We expect the 2008 Baytown Special Rodeo to be bigger and better than ever.

“Once again, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is sending its Rodeo Clowns, three bands have volunteered to play, Elvis will make an appearance, and, for the first time, we expect the Alabama-Coushatta Indians to perform,” Miller adds. “Each special needs child, who registers prior to the event will receive a cowboy hat, bandana, T-shirt and handmade stick horse. We really want to make this their special day.”

Special needs children in the following school districts have been invited to participate through their Special Education departments: Goose Creek (Baytown), Anahuac, Barbers Hill, Crosby, Dayton, Liberty and Huffman.

Information has also been shared with the Bay Area Rehab Center and the Baytown Opportunity Center. Parents may obtain registration packets at any of these locations. Registration is not limited to youngsters in these groups. Any child with a disability, no matter where they live or attend school, is welcome to participate. Registration forms and Special Rodeo information is available on the BSRA web site at www.specialrodeo.com. Children may also register the day of the event.

Parents, mark you calendars for Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Eastside Honda, 12527 I-10 East, between Mont Belvieu and FM 3180. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Baytown Special Rodeo is a 501 c (3) organization.
