Baytown police recovered a stolen car on Aug. 25 from a group of suspects thought to be involved in a series of aggravated robberies in El Paso.
The suspects – Charles McCarthy, 52, Jorge Enriquez, 24 and Heidi Torres, 25 – are accused of stealing a black 2008 Dodge Charger from the 1300 block of James Street earlier on Aug. 20.
They and the vehicle were located by a Federal Protection Officer with the Agua Preta Police Department in Mexico when the officer noticed that the vehicle had no plates.
Investigators said that the car was a rental that belonged to a woman that McCarthy had been living with for some time and that on Aug. 20 he stole the car along with the woman’s purse before heading to El Paso, picking up Enriquez and Torres somewhere along the way.
Sgt. Shawn Fischer said that a few days after the car was stolen the trio made a stop in El Paso Texas and robbed an elderly couple before crossing the border near Douglas, AZ.
“We think it was the younger two suspects involved with the robberies,” he said.
Fischer said that the three were stopped by Agua Preta police after discovering that the car was wanted by El Paso police.
Mexican authorities warned that they could only the suspects for 24 hours without a U.S. warrant for their arrest, and so Fischer said his department scrambled to establish their cases and arrange for their extradition.
“The police chief there said that if we could get the warrants he would personally drive them to the border. My guys worked their tails off to get those warrants done,” he said
McCarthy and Enqriquez are both charged with felony theft and Torres is charged with criminal trespassing in an unrelated case she was involved with in Baytown, police said.
El Paso police are still investigating the trio’s roles in the aggravated robberies in their area.
Fischer said that McCarthy has no previous criminal history but that his accomplices have had extensive run-ins with the law. Torres has been arrested several times for prostitution while Enriquez has been charged with two prior misdemeanor thefts and a felony theft.
All three suspects are scheduled to be returned to U.S. custody and arrested for the outstanding warrants.
