Massage for the Cure helps clients for a good cause
By JENNIFER SUMMER
Marjorie Landry noticed a painful pinch in her back a couple of days before her trip to Jazz Fest in New Orleans.
She rushed to the Kingwood Massage Envy and met massage therapist Alton Rideaux, who helped work the kinks out just in time for Landry to make it to the music festival and have a great time without pain.
“It was amazing. After a few days I had no pain and felt great,” Landry said. “I also got to know Rideaux and we had more in common than I would have ever thought.”
Besides both being from parts of Louisiana, both had been affected by breast cancer and they wanted to make a change.
Kingwood resident Landry, the president of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has teamed up for the second year with Rideaux and Massage Envy to host “Massage for the Cure” to help find a cure for breast cancer.
In the four years since its inception, Massage Envy has donated more than $529,837 to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Last year’s event alone raised $61,000 for the breast cancer charity which helped to provide mammograms for 60 women that may have not been able to afford the treatment.
“Massage Envy came to us last year and said they wanted to do something to help the Houston-affiliate of the foundation. We were delighted and last year was our first year to raise funds,” Landry said.
“The owner of Massage Envy decided we needed a corporate entity we wanted to sponsor and because of situations in his life and all of ours, Susan G. Komen was the best option,” Billie Jensen, clinic administrator at Massage Envy-Kingwood said. “Our main clientele is women so we want to do what we can to help.”
Massage for the Cure will be held Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. at all 24 Massage Envy locations and the massage therapists will give free one-hour massages in exchange for a donation to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
A few of the massage therapists even donated their tips to the foundation to provide more funding.
Registration begins Sept. 8 and anyone interested is encouraged to sign up early, as they ran out of spots quickly last year.
“There a lot of people in our community that have connections to Komen or have connections to breast cancer. Massage for the Cure will help us to raise funds for the foundation and hopefully find a cure soon,” Landry said.
Additionally, Landry mentioned that it was not only women who were affected by breast cancer; men can be diagnosed with the disease.
“All of us massage therapists will be on hand to make sure our customers are happy while working to donate to a good cause. Last year, I did 10 massages in a row and I am looking forward to this year,” Rideaux said.
Last year, Rideaux donated everything he made to the foundation in honor of his aunts who died of breast cancer.
“Massage for the Cure is very important because it raises awareness and educates men and women about breast cancer. Secondly, the money helps the foundation continue to provide services, and 75 percent of the donations received stay in the Houston area,” Landry said.
In addition to Massage for the Cure, the foundation sells “Ribbon of Love” candles that are pink, have the breast cancer supporter pink ribbon on them, and 40 percent of the proceeds go back to the foundation.
The Kingwood and Atascocita locations of Massage Envy will be participating in Massage for the Cure and invite everyone out to feel good for a good cause.
“In the future, I hope to build a community of participants where we can do projects like Massage for the Cure all of the time,” Landry said.
“We have the opportunity to raise money and awareness along with educating the community about breast cancer. Our goal is to end breast cancer forever and everyone should join to help us with this cause.”
