Katy Loses Close One

Updated: 08.30.08
GALENA PARK – Katy coach Gary Joseph said all through preseason workouts that his team would need to grow up.

In the showdown match between Katy and powerful North Shore, that was evident. And the Tigers grew up rapidly Friday night but not enough in the end as they dropped a 10-6 decision to the Mustangs in the season opener.

Defending state champion Katy was working on a 16-game overall winning streak and a 30-game regular-season winning streak. But North Shore extended its regular-season streak to 71 straight wins, one short of South Lake Carroll’s state record, with the win.

Katy actually led 6-0 at the half on Raul Balbuena field goals of 21 and 36 yards, but couldn’t hold off the North Shore running attack in the third quarter. The Mustangs drove 74 yards, the last 57 on consecutive running plays of 29, 5, 5, 6, 7 and 5 yards.

“We beat ourselves,” free safety Sam Holl said. “We came out strong in the first half. But we didn’t respond in the second half.”

Joseph pointed to mistakes such as the kick return team allowing a kickoff to bounce free until North Shore recovered it and two interceptions by quarterback Parker Ray in the fourth quarter.

“That’s not just Parker’s fault,” Joseph said. “Our receivers have to run better routs and our line has to block better.

“We just have to grow up. The kickoff was a growing up thing. But we grew up some and we’re going to be all right.”
