City officials want to make it clear that Missouri City is home to the reigning Miss USA 2008.

Signage in tribute to Crystle Stewart, Miss USA, was unveiled at the Aug. 18 regular council meeting.

The signs will mark Missouri City as the “Home of Miss USA 2008” and will be placed at major gateway entrances to the city.

Contacted for her response to the recognition, Stewart was surprised and honored to hear of the city’s plans.

“I was born, raised and educated in Missouri City and am proud to be a resident of this great community,” said Stewart.

During the meeting, council and audience members signaled their approval with applause as the sign was unveiled.

Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen announced that staff would be modifying the sign to add the City’s recent recognition as No. 56 on CNN Money Magazine’s list of 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S.

Stewart won the title on April 11 in Las Vegas, beating out 50 contestants from across the nation to be crowned Miss USA 2008.

Stewart returned home to Missouri City for a visit in June to a hometown celebration at Elkins High School, where she formerly attended as a student and taught as a teacher’s aide for autistic children.

From her residence in New York, Stewart reiterated her thanks to the community for its support, including her family, church, pageant coordinators, the FBISD school district and city officials. She also gave a special shout out to members of the Hightower Broadcast Media Academy for producing a video profile in support of her title run and Elkins High School for hosting her homecoming celebration.

Stewart competed for the title of Miss Universe in Vietnam in July, but lost her footing on the edge of her heavily beaded gown.

In various news reports, Stewart responded to the incident with the positive outlook and hallmark determination and persistence that has characterized her years of competing.

As the reigning Miss USA she continues to represent the country, promoting breast and ovarian cancer education and Inside Out, a motivational speaking, birthday party planning company she founded to empower young women and girls.

Stewart currently lives in New York and her family resides in Quail Valley.
