Local woman provides relief in wake of Gustav

Updated: 09.02.08
Amy Lundy, of Deer Park is in Louisiana as part of a team of National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) members responding to Hurricane Gustav relief efforts.

Lundy is part of the Eastern Region NCCC contingent of more than 45 18-to 24-year-olds who gave up their fall break to travel to the Gulf and provide assistance. Lundy and her team members will work with the American Red Cross (ARC) to provide client services in the wake of the storm. Currently the team is staffing shelters in Louisiana but is awaiting additional assignments.

Because NCCC is a team-based, residential program, it can deploy members quickly when a disaster hits. On Friday, Lundy and her fellow team members were briefed by ARC of the Delmarva Peninsula as a complement to disaster services training they received earlier this year.

And by Saturday, the team was in New Orleans distributing water to evacuees as they waited to depart the city. “I believe every person should give back to his or her community. We need to leave things better than we found them and NCCC is my chance to do just that,” said Lundy.

Members of the Eastern Region NCCC Campus have spent a good part of their service year responding to disasters. In addition to the Gustav relief work, teams have been sent to Iowa, Missouri and Wisconsin when FEMA requested assistance with those flood-ravaged areas.

In addition, Corps Members responded to Texas after Hurricane Dolly hit earlier this summer. Lundy and her team will work in Louisiana and other states hit by Gustav for at least 21 days.

AmeriCorps NCCC is a leadership program for young people ages 18 to 24. In exchange for completing 1,700 hours of service during a 10-month term, these young people receive an education award of nearly $5,000, plus a living stipend, housing and more. AmeriCorps programs are administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency.
