Still reeling from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, residents of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast area need more help to pick themselves up from Hurricane Gustav’s destruction.
The Red Cross has played an important role in assisting residents, but it takes a lot of money to do so. But one Woodlands resident has made it his mission to give The Red Cross a boost.
In October, George Sechler will join about 100 others to support the Red Cross by riding his bicycle from Beaumont to New Orleans as part of the Tour du Rouge.
Sechler will ride the 515 miles Oct. 18-23 to gain sponsorship donations. His company, Mod Space, is the full-title sponsor of the tour. Sechler is the company’s director of operations.
“Last summer, my son and I rode the 500-mile-long Bike Across Kansas tour on a tandem bike,” Sechler said. “I was looking for another ride and found the one for the Red Cross and was really excited about it.”
Earlier this year, Sechler and his wife decided the Red Cross was their favorite charity.
When she died from sepsis in March, he said the organization gained a special place in his heart with her memory.
“Their overall mission of helping everyday Americans really impresses me,” he said. “Not a lot of people know this, but they try to be present at every single house fire to provide aid to that family. They don’t only respond to natural disasters like hurricanes and tornados.”
The tour’s goal is to raise $1 million for the organization.
Sechler said in order to prepare for the tour, he’s been riding his bike almost every day, about 30 miles at a time.
Unfortunately, Sechler’s son James will be unable to ride with him since it’s during school.
James was the youngest rider to participate in the Bike Across Kansas tour, and “we still kept up,” Sechler said.
