Similarities exist in many of the world’s faiths. For example, Christianity, Islam and Judaism’s beginnings can be traced back to Israel, a country peppered with sites considered holy to the religions.

Noting this, two communities in the Northwest are embracing their joint heritage in an upcoming exhibition.

The Source, a collection of 30 photographs of holy sites in Israel will be co-presented to the community by Congregation Jewish Community North and Christ the Good Shepherd Catholic Community on Sept. 16 at 7 pm.

Produced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jerusalem, the photography exhibition presents 30 stations along a historical-religious route of great significance to the faiths.

CJCN spokeswoman Sharon Natenberg said the two communities have previously held joint events.

“We want to showcase Israel and how religions have differences, but we do share all these holy sites in Israel,” Natenberg said. “The country works to protect them and we are very proud of that and supporting other religions of the world.”

Half of the photographs will be displayed at CJCN, while the other half will be at neighboring church Christ the Good Shepherd.

The evening will begin at CJCN with an address from Deputy Consul General, Belaynesh Zevadia, the first Ethiopian woman in the Israeli Diplomatic Service.

Zevadia previously served as Consul of Israel to the Midwest in Chicago from 1996 to 2002, and while there, she was awarded the prestigious Kizze Prize for being a positive role model. In addition, she was awarded with the Black History Month’s plaque for contributions towards race relations.

The Source will be held at CJCN at 5400 Fellowship Lane, and the remaining photographs will be displayed at Christ the Good Shepherd at 18511 Klein Church Road. For more information, call 281-376-0016.
