Second Baptist holds off St. John’s
By MIKE TENNEY
In the first half of Friday night’s Second Baptist-St. John’s football game at Skip Lee Field, both teams moved the ball up and down the field with only fumbles and interceptions keeping them out of the end zone.
But in the second half, the Golden Eagles’ defense stepped up and shutout the Mavericks while adding on a touchdown themselves for some breathing room in a come-from-behind 29-20 non-district victory over the hosts.
“The defense did a good job in the second half,” said Second Baptist head football coach Mike Sneed. “In the first half, we missed some assignments. But I thought the big difference was the turnovers. We forced four or five turnovers and anytime you can give your offense some extra time with the ball that can only help your offense. We gave up some yards and a few big plays in that first half, but the kids settled down and did a much better job in the second half.”
St. John’s took leads of 7-0 and 14-7 in the first quarter, scoring on its first two drives of the game, before the visitors took control. Head coach Steve Gleaves said it was disappointing to get off to the good start and then not have a great finish.
“We did some good things and then we did some things not so well,” he said. “The thing we’re searching for right now is consistency. We weren’t consistent at all tonight. We’d make a few good plays and then have a few negative plays, on both sides of the ball, so we’ve got to find a way to become a much more consistent football team.”
The Mavs scored the first time they touched the football as senior quarterback Ethan Harry, who threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 71 yards, completed a short opening drive with a five-yard run to the end zone.
The Eagles answered quickly after a defensive pass interference call on their first play from scrimmage following the kickoff gave them the ball at the SJS 49. On the next snap, 6-4 junior quarterback Connor Wood found his favorite target senior Brian Franshaw (seven catches, 117 yards) for a 49-yard touchdown strike to tie the game with eight minutes to play in the first period.
The teams then traded interceptions and Angus Mitchell’s pickoff set up the Mavs’ second score – a two-yard run by junior fullback Rush Moody that put the home team up 14-7 with 2:51 left in the first period.
Second Baptist went three-and-out on its next possession, but the Mavericks fumbled the punt and SBS recovered at the 20 to keep the ball.
After two plays, including a Wood nine-yard hookup with Franshaw, Wood scampered nine yards for the touchdown with 11:43 to go in the second quarter. Josiah Tour made his second straight point-after kick for the Eagles, knotting the score up at 14.
The Mavericks were forced to punt out of their own end zone when their next series stalled, and the Golden Eagles proceeded to put together an 11-play, 46-yard drive to take the lead for good. First, Wood threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Seth Hackett, but a holding penalty took it off the board and even moved them back.
Undaunted, the Eagles picked up a first down instead on a 21-yard pass to Franshaw and then Wood threw an 11-yard touchdown strike to Hackett that stood for a 20-14 advantage with 6:15 to go until halftime. The Eagles decided to go for two and Wood connected with Franshaw to make it 22-14.
St. John’s senior safety Timothy Bernica returned his team’s second interception of the first half 37 yards just before halftime and the Mavs were back in business at the Second Baptist 32.
On third down, Harry tossed a 24-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Reed Daniel to cut the margin to 22-20. The score stayed that way when St. John’s two-point conversion pass fell incomplete with 1:21 remaining in the second period.
The Eagles (1-1) put their final score on the board in the fourth quarter when Wood, who also plays defense, not only halted a serious St. John’s scoring threat with an interception in the end zone, but he also returned it 55 yards to give Second Baptist the ball at the St. John’s 46.
Staying on the ground with senior running back John Buckley carrying the mail frequently, the Golden Eagles moved that distance before Buckley finished it off himself with a five-yard touchdown run. Tour finished a perfect night with his third consecutive PAT at the 7:40 mark.
Prior to that, the Mavericks (0-2) had been on the march to take back the lead, using a Harry 47-yard run to spark a drive that took them down to the Second Baptist 15. That was as far as they went however before the errant throw.
Second Baptist is back home Friday night to face down-the-road rival Kinkaid while St. John’s School is at Houston Christian that same night.
