City notebook: cigars, donations and a golden anniversary

By AUDREY M. MARKS
Updated: 09.03.08
“Texas Fest” a Las Vegas-inspired cigar smoking social event and fundraiser will be held in Sugar Land Town Square, after receiving city permission to allow participants to smoke cigars in Town Square Plaza.

In it's 3rd year, “Texas Fest” had outgrown its previous location at Sweetwater Country Club and began eyeing Town Square as a venue. But had to receive city permission as Sugar Land became a smoke-free town with smoking prohibited in public places like restaurants, businesses, public parks, Town Square Plaza and outdoor arenas on Dec. 31.

City Council approved the exemption Tuesday for the event hosted by Cigar Cigar, a Town Square business, slated to be held on Oct. 18. The exemption passed but had one opposed vote, Council member Thomas Abraham.

Proceeds from the adults-only fundraiser are going to the local Impact a Hero organization that is a resource for disabled veterans in Fort Bend County.

According to the letter from Cigar Cigar co-owner Jeff Bernhard requesting the exemption, more than 1,000 are expected to attend “Texas Fest. Tickets are $100 and include free cigars, spirits and wine, and live music.

The city is currently crafting an exemption procedure for future events where people can apply for an exemption to the smoking ordinance.

SUGAR LAND'S GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY

Sugar Land will celebrate its Golden Anniversary next year and to commemorate 50 years of incorporation the city is turning to a group of seven citizens to help organize a signature event and plan a commemorative art piece.

Each council member submitted a name to create the group, which includes: Prabhi Bala, Vijay Bhuchar, Alice Fish, Angie Jones, Thelma Jones, Tom Stewart and Terri Wang.

The city plans on celebrating the anniversary year round at events held annually in Sugar Land, like the community's Fourth of July celebration and the new Memorial Day observance.

The year-long celebration will end Dec. 2009. Sugar Land first became incorporated in the fall of 1959, with the first mayor and alderman elected Dec. 15, 1959.

BUSINESSES DONATE TO SLFD

Area businesses have recently made more than $2,000 in donations to the Sugar Land Fire Department. Fire Chief Dannie Smith accepted $1,500 in smoke detectors from Lowe's Home Improvement in Sugar Land and $750 in public education materials from the Fluor Daniel Corporation.

Smith said the Lowe's donation is approximately 200 smoke detectors, to be distributed in the community during home inspections.

The donation from the Flour Daniel Corporation will be used in purchasing community outreach materials that will be distributed during Oct. 5-11 for national Fire Prevention Week.
