Walkers to carry the torch for cancer at Light the Night Walk

Illuminated balloons will cover Market Street’s Central Park Oct. 26 as about 1,500 walkers line up for the Light the Night Walk hosted by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Registration is ongoing, and can take place at any point up until the time of the walk, said Julie Peters, local coordinator. Participants can sign up to join an existing team, or as a team captain to create their own team.
Business or corporate groups, civic teams and family members and friends take part in an evening walk of less than two miles, carrying balloons that hold battery-operated lights. The symbolic balloons honor both cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with the disease.
“It’s just this beautiful visual,” Peters said.
Peters’ “I Love Lynnie” team was formed after her friend and local realtor Lynne Stark, who passed away in 2003. Stark became involved with Light the Night following a conversation with Lynne’s husband, Tom, who asked Peters if she would be interested in heading up a team.
“That is what kind of encouraged us to do this,” she said.
This will be the fourth year the Light the Night Walk is held in The Woodlands and the third at Market Street.
Peters said the fundraising goal is $200,000. There will be fundraising incentives for race day. Balloons will be awarded to those who raise $25. T-shirts will be awarded for those who raise $100.
“Even $10 can add up,” Peters said. “Anything is welcome.”
On Oct. 26, registration and check in begins at 5:30 p.m., a band and children’s activities are set for 6 p.m. and the walk starts at 7 p.m.
Prior to the walk, an Oct. 19 fundraiser will take place at Pappa’s Ice House, 314 Pruitt Road in Spring.
Attendees can pay $10 to request a song or $25 to sing with the artist. The goal for that event is to raise $5,000. An exact time for the event and an artist are yet to be determined. For more information e-mail Peters at juliepeters410@sbcglobal.net or call her at 281-795-2806.
