City to launch esplanade landscaping plan

Based on the suggestion from the beautification committee, the city is going to initiate the esplanade landscaping plan by landscaping two areas on Center Street – north of Spencer Highway and south of X Street.

Gary M. Jackson, assistant city manager, said the two locations have little landscaping though irrigation systems are readily-available.

The city will plant two different colors of flowers around the sign at the esplanade north of Spencer Highway and a combination of Arapaho Red Crape Myrtle and White Indian Hawthorn at the esplanade south of X Street.

Four Crape Myrtles shape a square and enclose with four White Indian Hawthorns lining the middle.

The assistant city manager said Cristina Gossett, special projects coordinator for the city, came up with the pattern as she worked on the plan with the beautification committee and the parks and recreation department. He added the pattern will be replicated throughout esplanades as the funds become available.

“The idea was to try to have something uniform in the esplanades,” Jackson said.

Asked if the city has money to fund the landscaping, the assistant city manager said this time of the year – at the end of a fiscal year— is when the city staff wants to spend the money on this.

The beautification committee is co-chaired by Ryan Taylor and Marsha McDugle and has five members: councilman Charles Garrison; David Spradley; Martha Fousek; Brad Bull and Doug Burgess.
