San Jacinto College’s Small Business Development Center sets September workshops

The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at San Jacinto College will offer training workshops for small business owners and managers during the month of September.

"First Step: A Business Startup" is scheduled for Thursdays, Sept. 11 and 18 from 6 to 9:30 p.m., at the Central Campus SBDC located at 8060 Spencer Hwy. in Pasadena. The $40 two-night workshop is designed to help participants learn how to define business ideas, determine market potential and how to conduct a feasibility study.

"Introductory QuickBooks" will be held on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Pearland SBDC located at 2006 E. Broadway, Suite 101 in Pearland. The hands-on $79 workshop provides users with a sound understanding of QuickBooks functions. The class will cover setting up a company, invoicing, payables, journal entries, reconciliation and other necessary functions.

"Intermediate QuickBooks" is set for Tuesday, Sept. 23 and Wednesday, Sept. 24 from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Pearland SBDC. The hands-on $160 workshop helps users delve further into QuickBooks in areas such as address job costing, purchase orders, invoicing, customizing templates and analyzing financial data. Time will be allotted for questions and answers. The instructor for the workshop is Annette Taylor, a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.

"Starting a Business" is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the San Jacinto College North SBDC, located at 5800 Uvalde Road in East Harris County. Participants in the $15 workshop will learn about considering personal skills and experience, marketing potential of business ideas, general rules for operating a small business and sources of funding.

The SBDC at San Jacinto College provides free counseling and low-cost workshops to help small business owners start and grow their companies. Working with existing as well as start-up firms, SBDC seeks to increase profits, reduce failures and create jobs in the local community to contribute to economic development.

SBDC consultants can help business owners apply for business loans, create written business plans, devise marketing strategies, develop operating budgets and more. Workshops cover basic management topics.
