MC to hold referendum for park and recreation improvements

Updated: 08.22.08
Based on a recommendation from a citizen committee, the city of Missouri City will hold a special election on Nov. 4 for a $17.5 million bond referendum for park and recreation purposes.

Adoption of a special election ordinance allows the City to hold a joint election with Fort Bend and Harris Counties.

The proposition to issue general obligation bonds was presented to City Council in January 2008 by the Quail Valley Feasibility Study Committee, representing a cross section of the community.

Bond sales will finance the purchase of the 400-acre Quail Valley golf property as well as the Tennis Fitness Center and improvements to both properties. The resident committee, numbering 100 plus members, met during 2007 to study various aspects of acquiring and operating a city-owned golf course as well as examining related amenities.

The $17.5 million for the November election is for parks and recreation purposes, including Quail Valley property acquisition of new clubhouse/community facility, critical golf course improvements, golf development/learning center, tennis/fitness center and green space improvements.

The bond referendum, recommended by the citizen group, will authorize expenditures intended to enhance the quality of life, create a community gathering place, establish a featured destination and increase property values, according to City Manager Frank Simpson.
