Kidfish returns to Missouri City

Young fish enthusiasts and area youth wanting to try their hand at fishing for the first time are invited to attend Kidfish, a community outreach event designed to teach youth the basics of fishing.

The event, coordinated by the parks and recreation department in conjunction with the Greater Sugar Land chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, has returned to Missouri City after an eight-year absence and will be held Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. - noon at Community Park at 1700 Glenn Lakes.

Youth ages 16 and under are invited to cast their lines and enjoy an afternoon of fishing fun on one of Missouri City’s area lakes.

“We are bringing Kidfish back to Missouri City because of the numerous citizen requests we receive in the parks and recreation department,” said recreation specialist Jennifer Milam.

Last held in 2000 in the Missouri City area, the event was first launched in 1994 as an youth outreach program of the KidFish Foundation, a non-profit located in Little River, Texas.

The Foundation conducts fishing events throughout the state.

The goal of Kidfish is to educate a new generation of outdoor enthusiast in the sport and create an awareness and respect in youth for conserving the environment and its natural resources, according to the organization’s website.

The organization has hosted community fishing events, including its Kidfish “Catch Tank” a portable fish tank designed for indoor and outdoor use, throughout cities in Texas and in Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Locally, Missouri City parks and recreation staff, members of the Greater Sugar Land CCA and local fishing experts will be on hand to provide fishing tips to participants.

Fishing licenses, not required by the Texas Parks and Wildlife organization for youth under the age of 17 or anyone born before Sept. 1, 1930, will not be needed for this event, said Milam.

The Kidfish Foundation will supply rods, reels, line and bait, but youth are encouraged to bring their own equipment, if available.

The event is a “catch and release event,” said Milam.

"Our goal is to educate families in our community with the knowledge and opportunity to experience outdoor activities together.”

Milam describes the free event as “the perfect way for children and families to learn general fishing practices.

“ We hope that they will obtain a desire to continue learning and fish in any one of the many Missouri City fishing holes for years to come,” added Milam.

Participants are required to register for the event and can obtain forms at the Missouri City Community Center at 1522 Texas Parkway or at www.missouricitytx.gov.

Participants can also register at the park on the day of the event.

For more information visit www.missouricitytx.gov or stop by the parks and recreation department located inside of the Community Center.
