SISD raises property taxes in preparation for new school year

The Shepherd ISD Board of Trustees passed a tax adjustment at their August 18 board meeting. The new rate, which goes into effect September 1, is $1.36 per $100 value of taxable property.

The rate is a $0.009 decrease from last year’s rate. However homeowners may not see it as such.

“While we did lower the rate since property values have gone up we have to say it’s an increase,” said SISD business manager Ben Davidson. Davidson explained that the new rate is expected to generate an additional $224,169 for the budget.

The majority of that money will go to the maintenance and operation portion of the budget. The rest is allotted to pay for the bonds SISD sold to finance the renovation and remodeling of their campuses.

Also discussed at the meeting was the state of the construction going on around the district. Superintendent Jody Cronin reported that the primary school is almost completed and will be accepting students on the first day of school.

He also stated that the renovations of the middle school gym are taking longer than expected. This is forcing the high school and middle school students to share the high school gym for a few weeks.

The middle school principal said that in addition sharing a gym for the first few weeks of the year the biggest change will be a new TAKS assistance. The program will be for the students who didn’t pass last year’s test.

Additionally the board accepted the resignations of three teachers. They also approved the salary schedule for SISD’s new chief of police.
