Deer Park shows talent and depth in scrimmage

The Deer Park Football program held its first full-pads game of the year at Abshier Stadium recently against Baytown Lee High School in a scrimmage.

The junior varsity and sophomores kicked it off at the early slot and showed good things from top to bottom; however, one couldn’t help from hearing the frequent loud smacks of pads colliding in the JV scrimmage which was usually followed by loud painful groans from the stands signifying that the Deer Park junior varsity defense came to put there pads to work.

After nearly stealing the show, the Deer Park sophomores and junior varsity packed up and made way for the varsity action which was electric from the opening possession.

Baytown Lee took the first possession in there own territory and began to move the chains on decent running and couple quick throws to the flats.

Sooner than expected, the Deer Park secondary; that many have been anxious see in action; received good pressure on the quarterback from the defensive front.

Good anticipation from cornerback Terry House after excellent coverage from the secondary led to the first pick of the season on the first drive of the season for the first Deer Park touchdown of the season; a 35 yard run back to the house from Terry House with 10:49 to go in the first quarter would give the Deer the early lead and huge momentum.

Many would have put their money on a Hans Cook to Natreon Moose reception as the first six of the season for the Deer, but the athletic bunch on the defensive side of the football for the Deer just may have put a hint of foreshadowing in the air of many more exciting things to come from this vigorous defense this year.

Lee was unable to put together anything on the next three drives against the Deer and despite coming out firing and being aggressive early on, the Deer Park offense failed to move the chains on their first two drives of the ball game.

On the Deer third drive of the ballgame, they put the ball in the hands of senior starting running back Travis Carter who began to move the chains with some down hill running and sprinkle of smash mouth football that softened the Lee defense early in the half.

After Carter was able to set the Deer Park Machine in motion Hans Cook got the call and was able to break free from pressure to connect with senior wide receiver O’Neil Puga on a beautifully executed slant route to put the Deer into Lee territory.

The Deer would find the end zone on another excellent connection from Cook to Puga who showed signs of excellent reliability on catches in traffic.

Deer Park extended their lead to 14-0 before the half and held on to the 14-0 lead heading into the second half of play.

In the first half outstanding play was turned in by the entire first defense led by the two sets of brothers: Linebackers Jacob and Josh Hollub and Safety’s Travis and Tyler Fetgatter who played like a fierce pack of wolves in the first half.

It was obvious after the first half that the defense of ’08 was more than prepared to keep the longstanding tradition of good defensive football at Deer Park alive and well this season.

The offense came on strong at the end of the first and despite being a little nervy early on; they got to where they were firing on all cylinders and moving the chains nicely.

In the second half, the Deer Park second team picked up where the first team left off as junior running back Jerry Bonuz collected the ball midway through the third quarter and took the ball around the strong side on sweep that left Lee nearly in the dust if not for a touchdown saving tackle by a Lee safety.

Nevertheless, the Deer Park second team was in total command with the ball on the three yard line with 6:13 to in the third quarter.

Deer Park punched the pigskin in for their third touchdown of the game and a 21-0 lead after the PAT.

In the fourth, it was more of the same from the Deer as they controlled the football game with the first and second string teams.

Baytown Lee managed to put a good drive together late in the fourth and come away with a well respected drive and seven points, but in the end our boys looked sharp especially the defensive warriors who showed no sign of let up from first or second string.

Both offenses looked to come together after a few downs and offensive guys such as Hans Cook, Beau Kirkwood, O’Neil Puga, Brock Owen, Jacob Christy, Keith Liescheski, Paul Bolling, Josh Lounsbury, Natreon Moose, Cody Doyle, Jacob Garcia, Cody Breakiron, and Travis Carter showed stints of tremendous potential for the Deer in ’08.

The Deer have begun their mighty quest for the top spot in District 22-5A and they are determined to make the District 22-5A road to the playoffs run right through Clyde Abshier Stadium.
