WALLER - I.T. Holleman Elementary has a school full of talented teachers but one in particular will be performing his talents on Sept. 2 at the Houston Comets game.
James Mable Jr. and his oldest sister Alicia have formed a duo called “Blessed.” Blessed has performed the National Anthem at two of the Houston Comets Games and are invited once again to perform at the Sept. 2, 7:30 p.m. game at Reliant Arena. Blessed has performed at other venues including the Gospel Music Showcase hosted by Dr. Bobby Jones. The showcase is compared to the gospel version of American Idol in which Blessed advanced to the top 28 finalists.
James is the youngest of four children and is son of Pastor James Mable Sr. and First Lady Mary Mable. His gospel upbringing contributed to his musical career and it keeps blossoming as the years go by. Blessed was formed in 2005 and released its first gospel cd that same year. Four of the cd songs, written by James and Alicia, tell about their simple life experiences. The 1,500 cd copies sold out in less than six months.
James’ face lights up when he talks about his talents and how he plans on integrating it with his teachings. He says “students don’t want to know how much you know, they want to know how much you care.” James hopes to inspire students to have a greater passion for music. He says “music is a combination of bringing all subjects together. I want the students to say Wow! I love music not just today, but to have it in their hearts for the rest of their life.” James comes from a humble background and wants to encourage all students to “reach for their goals because they can achieve anything they wish no matter where you come from.”
I.T. Holleman Elementary School Principal Merilyn Godwin said, “I am delighted to have Mr. Mable join Holleman’s faculty. He is a very talented musician, and we look forward to him teaching our students music.”
James graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a BA degree in Music Education. He is currently enrolled at the university working on his Masters degree in Educational Administration and is a first year music teacher at I.T. Holleman Elementary. His plan is to pursue his doctorate and has hopes of singing at the Super Bowl or the Grammy’s one day.
