Police seek public’s help identifying auto burglary suspect

Police are seeking help in identifying a suspect recently caught on surveillance tape who had allegedly burglarized a vehicle, stolen a wallet and is seen leaving the Walmart store at 1107 Shaver with items purchased from the victim’s stolen credit card.

“The victim in this case was parked at a local exercise facility,” said Pasadena Police Department Auto Theft Division Detective D. Speights. “He left his wallet in his vehicle. As so many are, when people leave their belongings in their vehicles, it was burglarized, the wallet was stolen and the credit cards were used.”

Speights said the photo of the suspect is a good, clear picture.

“It shows a black male suspect dressed in a lot of red; hat, shirt, shorts and shoes,” he said.

“I don’t see anything after market about the truck,” said Speights. “The vehicle is probably an early ’90s, Ford F-150 extended cab, black in color. It looks like it has a headache rack right behind the cab.”

Speights said that cases such as this are extremely time consuming. “We are assigned a burglary of a motor vehicle case which usually turns into a financial crime,” he said. “We start tracking down credit card use. These cases involve a lot of man hours in phone calls, video, running here and running there and that takes a lot of our time.”

At first, detectives begin working on a Class A misdemeanor, Speights said.

“Then it turns into a felony offense because of the credit card use,” he said

With auto burglaries at an all time high, Speights said the Auto theft Department has a proactive approach to auto burglaries.

“We mix in as much proactive work as we can,” he said.

Auto Theft Division Sgt. James Anderson said his division actively pursues many productive efforts in decreasing auto burglaries.

“We do a lot of surveillance,” he said. “We do hotel, motel warrant sweeps. We get the names of the people living there, if they’re wanted somewhere, we take them off the streets. It takes some of the criminal element off of the street before they even arrive.”

Anderson said they double their surveillance in certain areas.

“We measured thoroughfares in town such as Beltway 8, Spencer and Fairmont because these perpetrators target areas that are easy on, easy off,” he said. “It’s a thoroughfare. They get on the parking lot, get something, get out and they’re gone.”

Anderson said in a case such as this case, their biggest hope is residents who come forward with information.

“We rely on citizens to report these cases because most of our cases are solved when someone does get a plate number or a very good description of the vehicle that we can put out there to the public,” Anderson said.

Anyone with information as to the identity of the pictured suspect, is urged to call the Pasadena Police Department at 713-477-1221.
