San Jac soccer falls 1-0 to Dynamo reserve
The San Jacinto College soccer team lost their first scrimmage match of the season 1-0 against the Houston Dynamo reserve team on Thursday, Aug. 21. Despite the loss on the scoreboard, San Jac gained some great experience on the field.
“The guys really played well and there were some good combinations out there today,” said San Jac head coach David Santesteban. “You really can’t take anything but positive experience from something like this, especially since we’re probably the only junior college to get a chance to play a MLS reserve team.”
Santesteban was proud of how his team preformed and feels they walked away with a great result.
“Unfortunately we let it slip in the end giving up a goal, but I can’t state enough of how proud I am of the team,” added Santesteban.
Although San Jac’s defense did a tremendous job holding the Dynamo reserve to only one goal, the main difference between the teams was ball control.
“There was an obvious difference between first touch and simple passing between the pro-level and junior college level, but that’s to be expected,” said Santesteban.
The newcomers stood out in a big way for SJC. Defender Cyprian Hedrick (Friendswood/Clear Brook High School) played solid defense throughout the match. Forward Jose Gutierrez (Houston/North Shore High School), midfielder Edward Campbell (Montego Bay, Jamaica), and goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias (Houston/Elsik High School), who had several saves in the first half, all stepped up in their first test of the 2008 season.
“Our defense was tremendous today. I’m very proud of our performance today,” concluded Santesteban.
San Jac will begin regular season play against Garden City Community College at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, in Great Bend, Kan., at the Barton County Bearcat Shootout.
