Cycler’s feet pump for disaster relief
By LAUREN HODGES
Red-blooded American and Woodlands resident George Sechler will be pedaling 515 miles on a six-day ride to New Orleans. Sechler will ride in the Tour du Rouge.
He will join seven co workers and about 100 total riders to benefit the American Red Cross chapters in the Gulf Coast.
Oct. 17-23, participating employees of ModSpace will enjoy an unusual work week biking from Houston making hotel stops in Beaumont, Creole, La., Abbeville, La., Morgan City, Gonzalez, La. and will finish the race in New Orleans. The company is the title sponsor for the race. Sechler connected his company with the Red Cross.
Sechler is the number one individual sponsor. He raised $5,000 in pledges from family, friends and business associates.
Sechler became involved with the Red Cross, because he supports their missions.
“Disaster relief is their main goal,” he said.
Sechler said they are on the scene of every disaster fire and available for residential fires in the United Sates.
“If they don’t have the resources they have a rep that is available to provide aid to those families,” he said.
After working with them he also found out they provide an emergency link for those who have military family overseas.
He said he plans to remain involved with the organization.
“My wife passed away in March,” Sechler said. That is when I got involved, she got involved. It was a charity she chose to support.”
Sechler will make very few stops, he said he plans to ride in the rain only stopping for lightning. As far as training goes, he said, “just ride the bike.” Sechler said the old famous quote from the Tour de France riders is to train you, “ride the bike, ride the bike, ride the bike.” He said he also threw in a little weight lifting.
Sechler is no amauter when it comes to organized rides. He has cycled in several 150-mile races and took his son when he was eight years old on a tandem bike ride across Kansas.
James, now 9-years-old, will not be making it to ride along side his dad on his way to Louisiana, he has school his dad said.
