For many Tomball and Magnolia residents, tax-free weekend is something they look forward to all year. For others, their shopping spree just had lucky timing.
Margaret Thompson, of Magnolia, said ordinarily she avoids tax-free weekend because of how busy it is, but this year couldn’t resist shopping at Academy Sports and Outdoors at 14221 FM 2920.
Thompson, who was shopping for her grandchildren, said she doesn’t buy more things during the weekend, but that tax-free weekend is an added bonus.
Cari White, of Tomball, said she waited specifically for tax-free weekend this year to save money on shoes at Academy for her son.
“I say we’ll only buy what we came for but I’m buying this bike for my son now even though it’s not tax-free,” she said.
For White, the statewide tax holiday provides financial benefits, she said, especially when the economy is rough.
“Any little bit helps,” she said. “What I’m not paying in tax could buy gallons of gas.”
Denise Miller, of Waller, came to Palais Royal at 27714 Tomball Pkwy to buy shoes for her son.
“I shop year-round but I come out for tax-free weekend to buy expensive things like shoes when they’re tax-free,” she said.
Because of tax-free weekend, both Academy and Palais Royal had extended hours.
Angela Elliott, store manager at the Palais Royal in Tomball, said as of Friday afternoon, this year’s tax holiday was trending a little ahead of last year.
“I thought it would be slower because of the economy but so far it hasn’t been,” she said. “If I can just do as well as we did last year, I’ll be happy.”
