Rumor not substantiated regarding American Flags banned at school

An e-mail that was sent around the area on Wednesday alleging that Cleveland ISD is banning American Flags from students’ clothing has been disproved.

According to Cleveland ISD Superintendent Kerry Cowart, the rumor started after an assistant principal at the high school met with some young students yesterday. During their discussion, the subject of dress codes came up.

“One of the things that was discussed was students not being allowed to wear American Flags on T-shirts if the flags are shown being desecrated,” said Cowart.

The superintendent also went on to explain what he meant by “desecrated.”

“Flags with other types of things incorporated with them, like skulls and crossbones or motorcycles,” said Cowart. “That’s not appropriate.”

The school dress code does not contain any ban on the appropriate use of the American Flag.

Regarding the e-mail, Cowart said, “It was just a misunderstanding.”

" Ok, let’s see.
Your child comes home and tells you that they were told in an assembly that they cannot were the US flag on their shirts.
You call the school and they tell you the same thing; then they read you the policy that states the same.
Later, you get a call from the assistant principle stating that he made a typing mistake, and the dress code should have read differently.
How is this a rumor? A clerical error yes, but not a rumor. "

" As one of the many parents who were involved in trying to confirm the new dress code policy yesterday, I am greatly concerned that our Superintendent has either been lied to by the high school personnel or has no problem lying to the press himself. One of the many concerned parents who were trying to get this information confirmed actually had the "new dress code policy" read to him over the phone by a staff member at the high school. I checked with my own high school student and learned that a teacher during one of his classes actually read the policy to the entire class during 6th period. This dress code was neither a rumor nor did it start as a misunderstanding of a student from a meeting with an Assistant Principal. This is an Assistant Principal's attempt to circumvent the actual 2008-2009 dress code policy of the District, which is posted on the CISD web site, to make his own rules. Furthermore, I think Mr. Cowart should also read the definition of desecrate. My dictionary doesn't imply that motorcycles desecrate anything any more than any other motor vehicle. Since when are motorcycles profane? "

" Perhaps someone should read the definition of a rumor.

dictionary.com “a story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts: a rumor of war”

From my understanding parents were calling the school before the emails were circulated. So how did the emails start a rumor; apparently this was also confirmed before the emails started.
Sounds like someone was “c.t.a.”!

The school had to accept it as a typing mistake because too many students were told the same thing.
The school should issue a formal statement to parents and students; and this should not be labeled a rumor! "

" I just received a call from the Cleveland High School; they were final returning my original call from yesterday. They call to inform me that my son had made a mistake! I informed her that the Assistant Principle had already call and admitted that the mistake was his; she was at a loss for words.

She assured me that tomorrow he would be bringing the new student handbook home. I'm just glad that I have the voice mail saved to confirm what I was told. "

" cxgt21 You have a voice mail saved that you should play for the Channel 2 news
I would love to hear it myself it they stated that it was against the rules to display american flag.
It sounds like the district is up against a wall "

" yea, my teenager has a christian ride free biker motorcycle shirt with the american flag all over it.... I bet he would not be allowed to wear it "

" Why doesn't the paper report that they were wrong and that the story isn't a false
rumor going around. That it was true and that the school is doing something
about making it right. What would it hurt? If the assistant principle can make a phone
call to a parent stating that he had made a typing mistake and should have read differently.
Why couldn't the paper post an update on the story. "

" This definitely wasn't a rumor. I read the handbook myself and was infuriated!!! I wrote a note on it and sent it back as we're supposed to do. The teacher was going to turn it in. I'm glad that we all feel the same way about this 'dress code error'. "
