Friends of the NRA shield local police officers

Humble Police patrol officers are better protected, and are in turn better able to protect local residents, thanks to the addition of two ballistic shields recently purchased with a $5,000 grant bestowed unto the department by the National Rifle Association Foundation.

“We will deploy these shields in our patrol cars,” said Humble Police Sgt. Danny Lee at the annual Friends of the NRA Banquet and Auction, sponsored by the Kingwood/Humble Well Oiled Guns chapter, at the Humble Civic Center Aug. 19. “Things like that used to be reserved for SWAT but we want to make it available to our patrol officers so they can use them when they need them instead of having to wait for someone to bring life-saving equipment to them.”

Lee said that in an “active shooter incident” at a school or work place, for example, there is no time for delays and the officers have to take action immediately.

In emergency situations, the bullet-proof ballistic shields provide additional protection to the officers, Lee said, in combination with bullet-proof vests which leave the face and limbs exposed.

“It would be nice to have a shield in every one of our 12 to 14 cars,” Lee said, “but at $2,500 a piece, that would get pretty expensive.”

The NRA Foundation presented the second check of the evening, in the amount of $10,641, to the Texas Hunter Education Instructors Association for the purpose of sending six local kids between the ages of 12 and 17 to the annual Youth Hunter Educational Challenge, a national competition, in Raton, N.M.
