Rising Star Annual FISD New Employee Luncheon

Updated: 08.15.08
The Rising Star Luncheon was a huge success for the Friendswood Education Foundation as well as for all new staff and their mentors and those who sponsored various areas of the annual event.

The luncheon was held Monday, August 11, 2008 in the Friendswood High School cafeteria.

Under the direction of FEF chairwoman and Foundation Director, Nona Landers, the event centered around a welcome to more than 50 new employees and their teacher mentors.

Food was provided by the FHS Wranglerettes drill/dance team and the officers were represented at the luncheon. The Wranglettes hope to inspire other FISD student organizations to directly partner with the Education Foundation in the coming year.

Two FISD Teachers of the Year, Elizabeth Kontrye and Carolyn Poole spoke to the new personnel and guests about what it takes to be a teacher and what a challenge and privilege it is. The two were contenders in the Teacher of the Year contest at Region IV, competing against 56 districts in the region. Poole has advanced as a finalist in the contest.

Natascha Cox, teacher at Windsong Intermediate, recently completed her first year as a teacher in FISD and shared her first year experiences with the luncheon audience.

Mayor Dave Smith and Superintendent Trish Hanks also welcomed the newcomers and guests. FEF President Michael Wegner closed the luncheon with special thanks to those in the room who donated to the Foundation and gave an appeal for all to give the cost of one lunch per pay period to the organization.

In the Directors’ role of fundraising, they are able to encourage successful giving since the School Board and FEF directors give 100 percent and more than half of all staff also give regularly.
