Police report

Updated: 08.19.08
A summary of calls to the West University police in recent days.

West U police arrested a motorist Aug. 10, who was driving in the 5800 block of Buffalo Speedway for not having a driver’s license or proof of insurance.

At 2:11 a.m. Aug. 11, West U police observed a driver in the 5200 block of Buffalo Speedway who was traveling 42 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. The driver showed signs of intoxication, refused all field sobriety tests and was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

A man believed to have been stealing mail from West U mailboxes was arrested and charged with fraudulent possession of identifying information.

This came after a resident of the 3000 block of University Boulevard reported that his mail had been taken. The complainant saw the man heading south on Vanderbilt Street, and police arrested him, finding checks from another West U address in the man’s possession.

On Aug. 13, police arrested a driver for possession of marijuana after a patrol officer noticed he was having trouble staying in a single marked lane of the 6200 block of Buffalo Speedway.

When the officer stopped the driver in the 3100 block of Duke Street, he “appeared to be overly nervous.” That’s when the office noticed “marijuana residue” in plain view on the vehicle’s center console. The driver admitted having marijuana in the car, and he was arrested.

Another person was arrested for suspicion of marijuana possession Aug. 14. A West U police officer noticed that the driver of a vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Annapolis and Talbot streets.

The officer stopped the driver and noticed the odor of marijuana coming from the car. A front-seat passenger in the vehicle then reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a bag of marijuana. The driver was released, but the passenger was arrested for possession of marijuana.

A West U officer on patrol in the 3600 block of Sunset Boulevard at 7:54 a.m. Aug. 14 noticed a car that was parked with its right front tire about 18 inches over the curb and on the grass.

The officer also observed “scraping damage” to the car’s left side, from the rear bumper to the driver’s side door. The officer was able to locate the owner of the vehicle, who said it had not been parked that way and had no damage. The officer gave the owner the paperwork to fill out an accident report and reported the offense of failure-to-stop-and-give-information.

At 1:38 a.m. on Aug 15, police arrested a driver on suspicion of DWI. The driver had been observed in the 6200 block of Buffalo Speedway, where he had difficulty staying within the marked lanes and wasn’t signaling an intent to turn. The driver was stopped in the 3100 block of Jarrad Street.

On Aug. 15, police met with a resident of the 2700 block of Plumb Street, who reported that his car had been stolen. The owner told police the car had been unlocked with the keys left inside. The car was recovered by Houston police.

A resident of the 3200 block of Albans Street told police someone had entered his guest house without his permission, and that an antique sleigh bed and mattress set had been stolen.

West U police investigated and listed the offense as burglary of a habitation under construction.
