Health fair welcomes senior adults

Next Wednesday, the Madison Jobe Senior Center will hold its 15th Annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair.

From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 20, the Pasadena Convention Center on 7002 Fairmont Parkway will turn into a virtual gallery of health and fitness for senior residents.

With more than 70 vendor booths, including representatives from Walgreens, M.D. Anderson and Harris County Sheriff’s Department, the health fair is a chance to promote health consciousness and awareness.

“Senior adults are invited to participate and we have had them coming from Baytown, Pearland, Friendswood and Houston,” said David Stuckey, recreation specialist for the Madison Jobe Senior Center.

Through a joint sponsorship with the Texas HealthSpring, Bayshore Medical Center and East Harris County Community Center Precinct 2, Madison Jobe, a service of the city of Pasadena, and the city’s Parks and Recreation Department, the event will give senior residents in Pasadena a chance to receive free health services and information throughout the afternoon.

Just a few of those free services include medical screenings for cholesterol, bone density, glucose and blood pressure.

Also on hand will be several businesses, social service organizations and agencies that focus on issues relating to seniors and guest speakers.

“The thing that makes it so great for me is that we’ve kept it at no cost,” said Stuckey.

The event has become a popular one in its fifteen years and Stuckey estimates that each year, up to 1,500 senior adults and family members make time to visit the health fair.

From 11a.m. to 2 p.m., Gulf Coast Regional Center will have their mobile unit encouraging guests to donate to Commit For Life.

The fair also functions as a social gathering, with door prizes, drawings, games, refreshments and entertainment, including Madison Jobe’s own dance troupes, a focal part of the event.

“It’s also a big networking event as well because people that work with senior adults in a variety of capacities can get information from other agencies,” said Stuckey. “There will be different resources and companies and they can even network with one another.”
