Bikers to ride to clothe children in time for school

A motorcycle ride and day of festivities hopes to bring in donations and raise money for children in need of new clothes, just in time for the new school year.

The first annual ride, sponsored by Upper Room Fellowship Church and the Hard Core Christian Riders Motorcycle Ministry, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 16.

Riders are to participate in a 50-mile ride along FM 1774, Spur 149, 105 and back to FM 1774.

Cheri Lynn Robinson, a member of the church and the coordinator’s assistant, said the ride is specifically seeking new pants for males of every size. People can also donate money or gift cards.

All proceeds are to go directly to Society of Samaritans, which is a coalition of churches and service organizations that seeks to serve the community. Gift cards that are donated are to be redeemed by the society in order to buy sizes that were not donated.

In addition to the ride, beginning at 38927 FM 1774 in Magnolia, there will be a barbecue meal, bounce houses for children, basketball, horse shoes and a playground at Grand Oaks Park. Admission is two pairs of new pants of any size and food is $5 per plate.

Robinson said she got the idea for this fundraiser when her brother, a single parent, struggled to buy new clothes for his daughter to start school with. After assessing the needs of the Society of Samaritans, she realized there was a greater need for boys’ and young mens’ pants.

“It’s not necessary for the pants to be jeans or high-end pants,” she said. “It’s just the tag on the clothes, I think, that means a lot to the children.”

Recipients must qualify for aid from the society.

“I was blessed to have parents who could pay for new clothes each year, but many people aren’t,” she said. “My heart just goes out to them and we want to help them however we can.”
