Retailers prepare for tax-free crowds
By YVETTE OROZCO
Tax-free weekend is about to crowd the checkout lanes as retailers prepare for a consumer assault this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
At Pasadena Town Square Mall, vendors are more than armed and ready.
“We have provided a list of all the non-taxable and taxable items to all our tenants so that way they are aware hat they can tax and what they cannot,” said Liz Cardenas, marketing director for the mall.
As for the crowds, the mall has already braced itself.
“We’ve scheduled adequate security in order to help with crowd control or somebody needs help with their shopping bags,” said Cardenas. “We also spoke with customer service and provided them with information so they can answer customers’ questions.”
In its 10th year, the Tax-free Holiday was initiated and timed to coincide with the beginning of the school year as the state’s way of lessening the financial burden on families.
“This was originally started mainly to give families a break at the beginning of the school year,” said Allen Spelce of the Texas Comptroller’s Office.
Several states like Louisiana have adopted the tax-free concept.
According to Texas’ own Tax-free Holiday law, all specified items on the taxable list apply to all retail outlets.
“If a story is open for business and it sells eligible merchandise, those items must be tax-free,” said Spelce.
Tax-free Holiday, said Cardenas, is a way to help customers in a time of economic challenges.
“With the economy right now, I think its important for the families to get all the extra help they can get,” she said. “We always want to give back to the community and even though this is mandatory, I think it’s a great way to do that.”
