Going back to school means purchasing items that did not survive the previous school year.

As a way to save money, the latest gear such as Hannah Montana shirts, school uniforms and other clothing and shoe apparel will be tax free this weekend, Aug. 15-17.

According to the Texas comptroller of public accounts, most clothing and footwear priced under $100 is exempt from sales tax, which could save shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. Backpacks under $100 and used by elementary and secondary students are also exempt.

In every community, Wal-Mart is gearing up and preparing to have their shelves stocked with the items that are deemed popular this year.

“Tax-free weekend is a very exciting time for Wal-Mart but especially for the consumers because they will save extra money along with our already everyday low prices,” said Dan Folgeman, spokesperson.

In Kingwood, stores such as Palais Royal and Stein Mart are also preparing to handle the consumer-based traffic during the tax-free holiday.

“This weekend is a significant event in Texas. We definitely expect to do good business and this will be a great draw for people to come and save money,” said Bob Aronson, vice president of investor relations for Stage Stores, which also includes Palais Royal.

In Atascocita and Humble, SuperTarget is looking at doing tremendous business especially in the clothing departments.

“Tax-free weekend is like the day after Thanksgiving at SuperTarget,” said Lynda Doggett, team leader at SuperTarget in Humble.

Executive team leader for the Humble location Ali Sulak said that it is a big day for the store, and the entire staff is called into work to accommodate the high volume of traffic that the store is expecting.

“We find that a lot of people purchase clothing, especially school uniforms, girls and boys clothes along with shoes during tax-free weekend,” Sulak said.

To take advantage of the tax-free weekend, the Texas comptroller’s office has published a list of items that are considered tax free. The list includes baby clothes; backpacks for use by elementary and secondary students; belts with attached buckles; cowboy or hiking boots; baseball, fishing, golf or knitted hats/caps; coats and wraps; adult and baby diapers; dresses; gloves; gym suits and uniforms; hooded shirts and sweatshirts; hosiery; jackets; jeans; baseball and football jerseys; jogging apparel; pajamas; robes; raincoats and ponchos; shoes, which include sandals, slippers, sneakers, tennis and walking shoes; socks; suits, slacks and jackets; underclothes and much more.

Items that will not be tax free are school supplies, hair accessories, wallets, watches, jewelry and rented clothing.
