Vendors Sought for christmas countdown

Texas Extension Education Association (TEEA) of Fort Bend is hosting the 2nd Annual Christmas Countdown craft show to be held on Nov. 15 at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds, Bldg. C. Both indoor and outdoor booths are available for a nominal donation. Call Sharon at 979-793-5073 for more information or to secure a vendor application.

Hope through Sharing Grief Support Group


The Hope through Sharing Grief Support Group at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital provides an opportunity to learn about grief, the process of grief, and how it impacts your life. The group also provides a safe place for those grieving the death of a loved one to work with their story and their feelings about what has happened. The group, which meets on the second Tuesday of every month begins with dinner at 5:30 p.m., and then moves to small group work until 7:30. For more information, call 281-274-7164.

Park Ten Toastmasters

Toastmasters is more than practicing your public speaking skills. Learn how to run a meeting, build contacts, communicate better with everyone you know — and change your life. ESL classes

Would you like to speak better English? Free ESL classes are being held on Sundays at 3:30 p.m. at the First Colony Church of Christ, 2140 First Colony Blvd. in Sugar Land. A free citizenship class is also taught on Sundays at 3:30 p.m. The church is located on the north side of Highway 59 at First Colony Boulevard. All are welcome. La Leche League

Mothers wishing to find out more about breastfeeding are invited to attend a meeting of La Leche League of Fort Bend every second Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital or every third Monday at 10:30 a.m. at River Park Community Center. Blue Bell Month blood drive

Help save lives and earn a sweet treat from the little creamery in Brenham. All who donate or attempt to donate with Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center during the month of August will receive a gift certificate for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream, redeemable at any local grocer. Donations can be made at the Sugar Land Neighborhood Donor Center, 4949 Sweetwater Blvd.

LEARN TYPING BASICS

Beginning typists – or people unfamiliar with a computer keyboard – are invited to attend an introductory class on basic typing skills at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. The class will be repeated every Monday in August, beginning at 9 a.m., in the Learning Lab in the Adult Services department at the library. It is not necessary to attend more than one session. India Art exhibit

In recognition of India’s Independence Day on Aug. 15, Fort Bend County Libraries First Colony Branch will present an exhibit of drawings by Sharad Mathur depicting rural life in India. The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of August, and can be viewed during regular library hours. Individuals who complete two successful donations between June 1 and Sept. 30 will be eligible to receive a $20 gift card to Target®. After a second successful donation during the promotion period, individuals may visit the Commit for Life store at www.giveblood.org and place their order for their complimentary gift card. Channel 11 “Spirit of Texas” blood drive

Channel 11’s annual blood drive takes place in Neighborhood Donor Centers through Sept. 1, and at the following Kroger stores and malls. All who donate or attempt to donate will receive a commemorative blood drive T-shirt. Donations can be made at the Sugar Land Neighborhood Donor Center, 4949 Sweetwater Blvd.

Children’s History Week

The Fort Bend Museum is offering one more week of children’s summer history programs from Aug. 12-15. All programs will take place in the morning (from 9 a.m. to noon) and afternoon (from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) on alternate days. Sessions are suitable for children ages eight through 12, but younger children may participate with parental supervision. Programs include Archeology, Frontier Survival, and At Home in 1860. Spousal Support Group for Demtentia Care

Silverado Senior Living, 1221 Seventh Street in Sugar Land, will host a spousal support group For dementia care at 11 a.m. Aug. 13 and Aug. 27. This support group is designed for spouses of a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. The group is both informative and supportive. If necessary, complimentary care is offered for the participant’s loved one while the group meets. The support group is free and open to the public. Book Break

Fort Bend County Libraries invites book-lovers to join in a Book Break on Aug. 14, beginning at 1 p.m., in the Conference Room at the Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge Road. The book to be discussed is “The Coffee Trader,” a novel by David Liss. The literary discussion group is free and open to the public; those attending are invited to bring along a lunch, if desired. Health fairs

Fort Bend Family Health Center, Inc. (FBFHC), will have a back-to-school health fair on Aug. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at its Richmond Center, on 400 Austin Street in Richmond. Services include free immunizations and vision screenings for all school-aged children. Free dental cleanings and sealants will be offered at the Stafford location. Limited dental appointments will be available at first-come, first-served basis. Services will be provided at no cost to children up 18 years old.

Fort Bend Aggie Moms

The Fort Bend Aggie Moms club is kicking off the school year with the first meeting on Aug. 18. Dr. Joe Townsend, vice president of student affairs, will be giving information and answering questions about the many activities that students can get involved in at Texas A&M. All moms of Texas A&M students, both College Station and Galveston, are encouraged to attend and join a wonderful group of fun, supportive ladies. Any students that are still in town are welcome as well. Meetings are held at the SugarLand Community Center. Social time is at 7 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. There is a support group for new student moms and Cadet moms at 6:45 p.m.

Sugar Land Great Books Group

The August meeting of the Sugar Land Great Books Adult Discussion Group, which meets on the third Tuesday of each month, will meet on Aug. 19, beginning at 7 p.m., in the Conference Room at the First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land. The August discussion will be on “The Leopard,” an Italian novel written by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. Anyone interested in finding out more about this book group is encouraged to attend. Families for Effective Autism Treatment (FEAT)

Families for Effective Autism Treatment will have its Fort Bend meeting Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. at Sugar Creek Baptist Church, Adult Chapel, 13333 SW Freeway in Sugar Land. At this FEAT meeting a video entitled “Because Our Kids are Worth it: A parent’s perspective on Behavioral Interventions at Home and School” will be shown followed by a discussion led by Christie Enzinna, BCBA and Kelly Bivens, BCBA, on how you can determine the effectiveness/appropriateness of different treatment methods for your child.

Book Break

Book-lovers are invited to take a Book Break on Aug. 21, at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond, beginning at noon, in Room 2D. Bring a sack lunch and enjoy a literary discussion of Lucia, Lucia, written by award-winning writer Adriana Trigiani. This book club is free and open to the public. Sugar Land Aglow welcomes Cheryl Archer as our speaker on Aug. 21 at Fellowship of Praise, 4100 Greenbriar, Stafford, at 9:45 a.m. to noon. Women’s Bible Study

Williams Trace Baptist Church is offering Bible studies to all interested women in the community. The nine-week evening study, themed “Daddy’s girls” will begin on Aug. 25 from 6:45 p.m to 8:45 p.m. WEdensdaty morning studies will begin with an introduction day & registration on Sept. 3 at 9:20 a.m. in Room 202. Wednesday morning studies include “Motherwise” a nine-week study ; “Patriarchs,” an 11-week study; “Beauty by the Book,” a seven-week study; “Kinsmen Redeemer” and “Titus,” two three-week studies; and “Can we talk,” a seven-week study. The next meeting of the Amiga Book Club, a discussion group for Spanish-speaking readers, will take place on Aug. 28, from noon to 2:30 p.m., in the Conference Room at the First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land. The book to be discussed in August is Abril rojo, written by Santiago Roncagliolo. The program will be conducted entirely in Spanish. The book club is free and open to the public. INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER CLASS

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff at the Sugar Land Branch Library, 550 Eldridge, will present a free, introductory computer class, “Computers 101,” on Saturday, August 30, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Tech Center. This class presents a basic introduction to using computers. The class is free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Women’s Bible Study

Women of all ages are invited to join in the study of the New Testament book of Romans this fall. The class begins on Sept. 3 and meets every Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary at Sugar Land First United Methodist Church, 431 Eldridge Road. The interdenominational women’s Bible Study, Merry Ministries, is led by Mary Willis, an active member of Second Baptist Church in Houston.
