Sundown rises to help PNC
Pearlanders enjoyed the sweet taste of some classic Texas tunes as the sun went down Friday night at Golfcrest Country Club.
While attending college at Texas A & M, Ricky Ford played in a band called “Sundown.” The band played their last gig in College Station in 1989.
Several years ago they decided to have "reunion gigs", taking turns at each band member's home. This year, the reunion was to be held in Nashville.
But when the rest of the guys found out about Ricky's “quest for the throne” during this year’s Pearland Neighborhood Center’s King and Queen fundraising drive, they decided to come here and help raise money instead.
Bandmembers traveled from Boise, Nashville, Washington and Austin to join Ricky onstage, covering (and adding their own special touches to) the sounds of Texas favorites Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keene and Shake Russell, as well as Lynard Skynard, Merle Haggard, Bad Company and B.B. King, among others.
Friday night's event drew over 250 people. Friends and family donated auction items that were auctioned off during the night to help raise funds for the PNC. One such item was a 1991 Fender Stratocaster (USA Model) donated by Ron & Denise Holcomb, long time Pearland residents. The guitar caught the eye of Sundown guitarist Tim Williams, now of Boise, Idaho, who purchased the guitar with a winning bid of $1025.
The PNC’s annual gala will be Aug. 22 at Hotel ZaZa in Houston. This year’s theme is “Puttin’ on the Ritz.” For more information call 281-485-1987, or go to www.pncball.org.
