Chiropractor offers solutions to help autistic children

Autism is a brain development disorder that impairs a young child’s social interaction and communication, sometimes causing erratic behavior.

Children in America suffering from autism have become more prevalent recently, with more cases being reported each year.

Many people believe, and some research has shown, that the mercury found in childhood vaccinations can be linked to cases of autism in children. Others believe that it is a combination of toxic environmental chemicals.

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, autism is the most common condition in a group of developmental disorders known as the autism spectrum disorders. It is characterized by impaired social interaction, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication and unusual, repetitive or severely limited activities and interests.

Sammy Tao, chiropractor at The Wellness Center in Copperfield, said he is passionate about the studies linking childhood vaccinations to autism because he has two young daughters and he wanted to be informed of the risks vaccinations may cause.

“Mercury is toxic to the neurological system and though the mercury has been removed from some of the vaccines, there are still preservatives in those vaccines that a child can be exposed to and harmed,” Tao said.

Tao said he believes the number of vaccinations a child has to receive and how early they have to receive them is the real issue.

“A child who is only a few months old immunity and neurological system hasn’t fully developed,” he said. “Too many toxins can have a damaging effect on a child’s development.”

Tao mentioned other factors that can be attributed to autism: childhood traumas, toxins given to a baby through a pregnant mother who drinks, smokes or uses drugs and exposure to the 82,000 chemicals in our water, food and air.

Tao said there is no effective drug treatment for autism, but there are some solutions for detoxification (removing harmful toxins from the body).

“Detoxifying the body of toxic heavy metals and improving neurological function can both help,” he said.

The Wellness Center offers Chelation, a process used to extract heavy metals from the body using a chelating agent. Chelating agents are substances that, by structure, attach to heavy metals, combine with them and are then removed from the body by human wastes.

“We use Zeolite as a chelating agent,” Tao said. “It’s a natural mineral from volcanoes and we use the one that is organically produced.”

Tao said The Wellness Center utilizes several different approaches to enhance a person’s entire well-being.

“We do total overall health assessments here,” he said. “We look at nutrition, exercise adjustments, therapies and acupuncture.”

Tao said manipulation of the joints and bones of the body can reduce the damage caused by traumas we experience growing up or in our daily lives.

Tao will host a lecture on autism Monday Aug. 25 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bear Creek Library. It is located at 16719 Clay Road in Houston. For more information, call The Wellness Center at 281-858-4446.
