Deer Park ISD, police plan training exercise

Updated: 08.19.08
Deer Park ISD and the Deer Park Police Department will hold a joint training exercise on Thursday, Aug. 21.

District and police officials scheduled the exercise to review and improve emergency response plans. The joint training exercise will involve school district staff as well as members of the Deer Park Police Department’s SWAT, or Special Weapons and Tactics, unit.

The first part of the exercise will take place about 8:30 a.m. at Deer Park High School-South Campus. The exercise will continue at about 1:30 p.m. at DPHS-North Campus.

Aug. 21 is a teacher in-service day, and, although student activities such as athletics, band and drill team practice as well as student registration will continue as scheduled, no students will be involved in the joint training exercise.

“Members of the community as well as students may see police vehicles and several uniformed officers at South Campus and North Campus that day,” Deputy Superintendent Don Dean said. “We don’t intend to alarm anyone, but it is possible that people will see the increased level of activity at the two schools and worry that a serious incident has taken place.

“It’s important that parents and students understand that this event is a drill that will test both the school district‘s and the city’s emergency operations plans,” Dean continued. “We hope to learn from this exercise and use the lessons learned to further improve our emergency response plans.”
