U. S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) visited the San Jacinto Monument and Museum on Battleground Road in La Porte on Wednesday.

The visit, sponsored by the Economic Alliance Houston Port Region, concluded her three-day, 600-mile bus tour along the Texas Gulf Coast from Harlingen to Port Arthur.

Hutchison was welcomed by a “Texas Army” salute at the monument. Larry Spasic, San Jacinto Museum president, and Jim Edmonds, chairman of Port of Houston Authority, each made brief speeches. Dozens of people, including area politicians and business leaders, gathered to hear the senator.

“I was pleased to meet with Texans from Harris County today to update them on what I’ve been doing in Washington to address the issues that are important to them,” said Hutchison. “As I travel to La Porte and other Texas towns this month, I am most interested in hearing directly from Texans so I may better represent them in the Senate.”

The bus tour highlighted the commerce and industrial leadership in the region’s energy production and port facilities that the Gulf Coast provides.

Among the highlights she cited during her tour are:

• She helped to secure more than $82.6 million in operations and maintenance funding since Fiscal Year (FY) 2006 for the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW).

• Since FY 1998, she has helped to secure more than $394 million in construction funding for the Houston-Galveston Navigation Channels project. Hutchison also helped to secure $121 million for the ongoing operations and maintenance of the Houston-Galveston Navigation Channels.
