“Hope” photographer gets national recognition
By KIMBERLY POORE
Debi Gomez photographs people who inspire hope, not only in herself, but in other people. This love led the local photographer to create a project that assembles these people of inspiration and puts them into a calendar. The calendar is then sold, and funds are immediately donated to a local charitable organization.
“It is nice to be able to present charities with a big check,” said Gomez. “You feel like you are really making a difference. I was able to put my talents to good use and hopefully make a difference.”
Since its inception, the Hope Calendar is an annual project to which Gomez has donated more than 400 hours. In 2007, the calendar raised funds of nearly $4,000, all of which was donated to Texas Children’s Hospital.
Her charitable work has gained the photographer national attention and she was recently recognized in this month’s issue of ‘Studio Photography’ magazine in a feature about The Hope Calendar.
The 2009 project will benefit the Montgomery County Women’s Center in The Woodlands, which Gomez said is “a shining example of hope.” Gomez hopes raise twice the funds of last year’s project.
The 2009 calendar will feature more than 24 families from across northwest Harris County.
“The beautifully simple calendar features photographs of area children who are the best inspirations of hope,” Gomez said.
Life's Images Photography specializes in portraits celebrating life and love through private photography of maternity, newborns, children and family.
“I like to photograph pregnant women and newborns,” Gomez said. “It is like witnessing a miracle every time and it is a celebration of life. It is a natural beauty and is eye-catching to see.”
