Businesses spring up all over League City
By JENNIFER NORRIS
With a lot more land and more than a few burgeoning neighborhoods, League City is starting to look a lot like the Clear Lake area.
A new retail shopping center is currently under construction in League City’s new shopping district at FM 646 and Interstate 45, and the stores slated to occupy the center are almost a match of the stores that currently line Bay Area Boulevard.
League City Economic Development Coordinator Doug Frazior said the city could expect a new PetSmart, Hobby Lobby, Michael’s, Office Depot, Ross, Ashley Furniture and Sports Authority, to name a few.
The city already has, on other corners at the same intersection, its first Best Buy, Circuit City, Kohl’s, Home Depot, Target, and a new JC Penney that is scheduled to open soon, not to mention a fairly new Wal-Mart.
Frazior said the sudden and intense interest in developing League City is the direct result of the city’s rapid population growth.
“We’ve had a growth rate of almost 44 percent since the 2000 census,” Frazior said. “In 2000, the population was 45,444 and today it is estimated at 67,000.”
In addition, League City has one valuable commodity that most cities around it are quickly running out of - space for new businesses.
“The Clear Lake area is built out, but almost half of League City is still vacant land, and there’s still a lot of room for population growth,” Frazior said.
Another development that may bring in even more League City residents is UTMB’s plan for a new speciality medical care center just south of the Interstate 45 and Highway 96 intersection. Frazior said UTMB has purchased the land, which is set aside for a $61 million, 110,000-square-foot facility.
The branch will not house any classrooms and will be reserved for medical services, including some outpatient surgery, but Frazior said it is not considered a hospital since it will not have an emergency room.
