Poker players deal helping hands during tournament

A group of Montgomery County residents went “all in” Saturday for children, participating in a Texas Hold ’em charity tournament at the Horseshoe Club on the Montgomery County Fairgrounds.
The event, hosted by the Cut-N-Shoot Harley Owners Group, was held for the third time benefitting Cut-N-Shoot Charities, particularly the annual toy run for underprivileged children.
“Everything stays right here in Montgomery County,” Director Bill Haggard said, “Every dollar you put into it, you get to buy that many more gifts for kids in Montgomery County.”
Participants paid a $100 entry fee to the tournament, with a $50 re-buy.
The event grossed approximately $10,000 accumulatively the last two years, and raised more than $2,000 Saturday with 20 players participating. Payouts for the players were certificates to use at the Cut-N-Shoot Toy Run Auction in October.
The Cut-N-Shoot HOG chanpter has raised more than $600,000 since 1997, hosting benefits for the Montgomery County Food Bank, the Montgomery County Women's Center, Montgomery County Emergency Assistance Inc., The Friendship Center and Montgomery County Interfaith Hospitality Network.
Participant Richard Otwell said securing the future for Montgomery County children is essential to the community.
“If you don’t give back, you have no community, and it’s all about the kids,” he said. “Our investment in our kids is our future, and you have to take that extra step.”
The chapter has provided Christmas presents to more than 1,500 children in Child Protective Services over the past 15 years.
A 2009 Harley Davidson Heritage Softail motorcycle is also being raffled for $20 a ticket.
The drawing for the motorcycle will be during the Cut-N-Shoot Toy Run at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds Dec. 14.
Haggard said the chapter’s mission is to help Montgomery County from the inside out.
“Everything stays right here in Montgomery County,” he said, “We live here, so we give back to our community.”
